Justice Restored

In July of 2008 Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco changed the administrative procedure when a juvenile is arrested in San Francisco. The new procedure turned over to the immigration service anyone who the juvenile justice system suspected of being undocumented. This was prior to the juvenile being convicted of anything. This change caused 5-7 or more youths a month to be sent to immigration. A coalition of organizations have been resisting this change. Last week the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted overwhelmingly to reverse this injustice. Angela Chan, Staff Attorney of the Asian Law Caucus, one of the organizations advocating for change, joins me to explain what has happened and to help me understand the significance of the Board of Supervisor’s action.
